Playing Career

​

Scott Sobkowiak is a former Major League Baseball pitcher who was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 7th round of the 1998 MLB Draft out of the University of Northern Iowa, where he ranks among the program's all-time leaders in both strikeouts and innings pitched. He earned All-Missouri Valley Conference honors in 1997 and represented Team USA internationally that same summer, while also playing in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League with the Falmouth Commodores — a league renowned for producing MLB talent.

Sobkowiak advanced through the Braves' organization as one of their top pitching prospects before reaching the major leagues, making his MLB debut for the Atlanta Braves on October 7, 2001. His professional playing career spanned over a decade and took him across the country and internationally, including stints in the independent Frontier League with the Rockford RiverHawks, the Atlantic League with the Somerset Patriots and Lancaster Barnstormers, and a season overseas with the Chinatrust Whales of Taiwan's CPBL (Chinese Professional Baseball League) in 2005. In total, Sobkowiak's baseball journey has taken him to 44 states and 7 countries, giving him a rare, well-traveled perspective on the game.

 

Coaching Career

 

After his playing days, Sobkowiak transitioned into coaching as the pitching coach for Lewis University's baseball program, where he built a strong track record of player development. Under his instruction, a Lewis pitcher earned All-Great Lakes Valley Conference honors in every one of his seasons on staff, and his pitching staffs were consistently among the nation's best — leading the country in team ERA for over a month during the 2013 season. His pupils include multiple All-Conference honorees and a GLVC strikeout champion who earned Daktronics All-Region First Team recognition.

Sobkowiak continues to share his expertise through Sweet Spot Pitching, his instructional platform dedicated to teaching pitchers of all levels — from beginners to advanced athletes — proper pitch grips, wind-up and delivery mechanics, and the strategic elements of pitching. Drawing on 35 years in the game and experience alongside multiple Hall of Fame teammates, Scott brings both big-league pedigree and proven coaching results to every athlete he works with.

 

Scott will speak to the pitchers about their throwing routines, throwing programs, and pitch grips and will also talk to them about anything else he feels is necessary for the development of a young pitcher.
